In Rotation: December 2004

In putting together this post, I was reminded of the Saint Nicolas cantata by Britten I listened to during the Christmas season. I had no idea before hearing this piece that Jolly Old St. Nick is the patron saint of children because he resurrected three kids who had been killed and then pickled in brine by an evil innkeeper! And here I thought I was putting on some cheery Christmas music, a sort of Ceremony of Carols for men. So you can imagine what a shock it was when we hit the "Saint Nicolas and the Pickled Boys" movement and it was about cannibalism, rather than kids getting blitzed on warm Cossack vodka straight from the bottle.
